The Teaching Phases of East Lothian's Number Signposts

Progression in number needs to take into account the number range that a child can solve problems within and the sophistication of the strategies used. The Stages of Early Arithmetical Learning (SEAL) is a good starting point for users to understand the subtle differences in how children approach number problems. Information of the stages can be found here.

The signposts are arranged into  phases that focus on 5 key areas:

  • Understanding Numbers and Numerals
  • Number Structuring for Addition and Subtraction
  • Understanding Multiples and Sequences of Multiples
  • Grouping and Sharing for Multiplication and Division
  • Fractions, Decimals and Percentages
For each aspect we have identified:
  • Learning Outcomes
  • Settings that support structured numerical thinking
  • Progression towards mathematisation (bringing a more sophisticated mathematical approach to a number problem)

Users are required to consider all 3 aspects when planning learning.

CLPL courses and videos have been created to support teachers with understanding how the signposts are used. These can be accessed by East Lothian Teachers via the button on the left hand side.
